Limfome

Limfome is a type of cancer that originates in lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell crucial to the immune system. These lymphocytes are found in lymph nodes, the spleen, the thymus, and bone marrow, as well as other parts of the body. When lymphocytes become cancerous, they begin to grow uncontrollably, crowding out healthy cells and impairing the body's ability to fight infection.

There are two main categories of limfome: Hodgkin limfome and non-Hodgkin limfome. Hodgkin limfome is characterized by the presence of a specific type of abnormal cell called the Reed-Sternberg cell. Non-Hodgkin limfome is a broader category that encompasses all other types of limfome. The symptoms of limfome can vary but often include painless swelling of lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin, as well as fever, night sweats, and unexplained weight loss.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, blood tests, imaging scans such as CT or PET scans, and a biopsy of an affected lymph node or other tissue. Treatment options depend on the type and stage of the limfome, as well as the patient's overall health. Common treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation. Early detection and treatment are important for improving outcomes.
