Likvidoituminen refers to the process of converting an asset into cash or its equivalent. This can occur in various contexts, from personal finance to business operations and legal proceedings. In personal finance, an individual might liquidate assets such as stocks, bonds, or real estate to generate funds for expenses, investments, or debt repayment. For businesses, liquidation can mean selling off assets to raise capital, settle debts, or wind down operations. This can be voluntary, such as a company deciding to cease trading, or involuntary, often driven by bankruptcy or insolvency.

In a bankruptcy scenario, a trustee is typically appointed to oversee the liquidation process. They are responsible for selling the debtor's assets to satisfy creditors according to legal priority. The term "liquidation value" is often used to describe the estimated amount an asset would fetch if sold quickly in a liquidation sale, which may be lower than its market value. The speed and efficiency of liquidation can significantly impact the amount of cash realized. Certain assets, like highly specialized equipment or illiquid real estate, may take longer to liquidate and might fetch a lower price compared to more easily traded assets like publicly listed stocks.
