Likestrømsstrømmer, often referred to as direct current (DC) currents, represent the flow of electric charge in one direction. Unlike alternating current (AC), where the direction of charge flow periodically reverses, in DC, electrons move consistently from a negative terminal to a positive terminal. This steady flow is fundamental to many electrical applications.

The primary source of DC is batteries, which generate electricity through chemical reactions. Solar cells also produce DC power, converting sunlight directly into electrical energy. Many electronic devices, such as smartphones, laptops, and LED lights, rely on DC power to operate. They often contain internal circuitry to convert AC from the power grid to the DC required by their components.

The voltage in a DC circuit remains constant over time, assuming a stable power source. This consistency is crucial for the precise operation of sensitive electronic components. While AC is used for power transmission over long distances due to its ease of voltage transformation, DC is prevalent in lower-voltage applications and within the internal workings of most modern electronics.
