Liikumishaiguse

Liikumishaiguse, also known as motion sickness, is a common neurological condition characterized by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and cold sweats. It occurs when there is a conflict between the sensory information received by the brain from the eyes, inner ears, and proprioceptors (sensors in muscles and joints). This sensory mismatch can happen during travel in cars, boats, airplanes, or even on amusement park rides.

The inner ear, specifically the vestibular system, plays a crucial role in detecting motion and balance. When the body is moving, but the eyes perceive stillness (for example, inside a car with tinted windows), or vice versa, the brain receives conflicting signals. This confusion can trigger the body's defense mechanisms, leading to the unpleasant symptoms of motion sickness.

Factors that can increase susceptibility to motion sickness include age (children and older adults are often more affected), hormonal changes (like those during pregnancy or menstruation), and certain medical conditions. Genetics may also play a role, with some individuals being predisposed to the condition.

Treatment and prevention strategies often involve sensory desensitization, such as looking at a fixed point on the horizon, or using medications like antihistamines and anticholinergics. Behavioral techniques, such as avoiding reading or looking at screens while moving, can also be helpful. Acupressure bands worn on the wrists are another common, though less scientifically proven, method of relief for some individuals.
