Lihassäieitä

Lihassäie, or muscle fiber, is the fundamental cellular unit of muscle tissue. These elongated, multinucleated cells are responsible for the contraction and generation of force that enables movement in animals. Lihassäie are highly specialized for their function, containing a dense arrangement of contractile proteins.

There are two main types of lihassäie: slow-twitch (type I) and fast-twitch (type II). Slow-twitch fibers are characterized by their endurance and ability to sustain prolonged activity, often seen in postural muscles. They rely on aerobic metabolism and have a rich blood supply and numerous mitochondria. Fast-twitch fibers, on the other hand, are designed for rapid, powerful contractions. They can be further divided into subtypes (IIa and IIx/IIb) with varying degrees of fatigue resistance and force production. Fast-twitch fibers primarily utilize anaerobic glycolysis for energy.

Within each lihassäie are myofibrils, which are made up of repeating units called sarcomeres. Sarcomeres contain the contractile proteins actin and myosin, which interact during muscle contraction. The sliding filament theory describes how these filaments slide past each other, shortening the sarcomere and thus the entire lihassäie. The nervous system controls lihassäie activity through motor neurons, which transmit electrical signals to the muscle. A motor neuron and all the lihassäie it innervates form a motor unit. The recruitment and firing rate of these motor units determine the overall strength and precision of muscle contraction. Lihassäie can increase in size (hypertrophy) or number (hyperplasia) in response to training or other stimuli.
