Lifeson

Alex Lifeson (born Alexander Zivojinovich; August 27, 1953) is a Canadian guitarist and a founding member of the rock band Rush. Formed in 1968 in Toronto, Rush became one of the most influential groups in progressive rock, known for complex compositions, technical playing, and melodic accessibility. Lifeson’s guitar work is noted for its lyrical melodies, dynamic phrasing, and inventive use of effects and tone.

Lifeson was born to Serbian immigrant parents and adopted the surname Lifeson early in his music career. He joined Rush as its guitarist, alongside Geddy Lee; the band later recruited drummer Neil Peart. With Rush, Lifeson helped release a string of albums that achieved critical and commercial success, including 2112, Moving Pictures, Signals, and Grace Under Pressure. His playing ranges from heavy riffing to delicate, song-centered solos, often complementing Lee’s bass lines and Peart’s percussion.

In recognition of their influence, Rush was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Lifeson has also pursued various side projects and solo work, and across his career has used a variety of guitars, notably Gibson Les Pauls and Paul Reed Smith instruments, to craft his distinctive tone.

Outside of music, Lifeson has been described as private and reserved, and remains based in Canada. He is widely regarded for his contributions to rock guitar and his role in Rush’s enduring legacy.
