Lexikográfia is the practice and theory of compiling dictionaries. It encompasses the principles and methods used to create dictionaries, encompassing their content, structure, and design. Lexicographers are the individuals who engage in this work, researching, defining, and organizing words and their meanings.

The field of lexicography deals with various aspects of language, including vocabulary, etymology, pronunciation, spelling, usage, and semantics. A key task is the selection of entries, determining which words to include based on frequency, relevance, and historical significance. Lexicographers also craft definitions, aiming for clarity, accuracy, and conciseness, often providing multiple meanings for polysemous words.

The structure of a dictionary is another crucial element. This involves deciding on the order of entries (typically alphabetical), the format of each entry (headword, pronunciation, part of speech, definitions, examples), and the inclusion of supplementary information like synonyms, antonyms, and etymological notes. Different types of dictionaries exist, such as monolingual, bilingual, historical, and specialized dictionaries, each with its own lexicographical considerations.
