Levähdysajat

Levähdysajat is a Finnish term that translates to "rest periods" or "breaks" in English. It refers to the mandated durations of downtime for professional drivers operating commercial vehicles, particularly trucks and buses, within the European Union and Finland. These regulations are designed to prevent driver fatigue, which is a significant cause of road accidents.

The core principles of levähdysajat are based on the EU Regulation 561/2006 concerning the harmonization of certain social legislation relating to road transport. This regulation specifies the maximum daily and weekly driving times, as well as minimum rest periods. Drivers are required to take regular breaks during their driving shifts and longer, uninterrupted rest periods at the end of the day and week.

There are different types of rest periods within the levähdysajat framework. Daily rest can be regular (at least 11 consecutive hours, which can be split) or reduced (at least 9 consecutive hours, not more than three times between two weekly rests). Weekly rest requires at least 45 hours, which can be reduced to 24 hours under certain conditions. These rest periods must be taken away from the driving seat of the vehicle.

Compliance with levähdysajat is monitored through tachographs, electronic devices that record driving times, speeds, and rest periods. Drivers and transport companies are legally obligated to adhere to these regulations, and failure to do so can result in fines and other penalties. The aim of these rules is to improve road safety by ensuring drivers are sufficiently rested and alert.
