Lenguatge

Lenguatge refers to the human capacity and the organized system of communication that uses signs, sounds, gestures, and written symbols. It encompasses spoken languages, sign languages, and writing systems, and operates within and across communities through conventional rules of form and meaning. The term is typically used to describe complex, culturally embedded systems rather than isolated utterances.

Core components of lenguatge include phonology (sound systems), morphology (word formation), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (contextual use). Languages are generative systems: a finite set of rules can produce an infinite variety of expressions. They exhibit features such as duality of patterning, arbitrariness of signs, and the capacity for displacement, allowing talk about things not present in the immediate environment.

Languages vary widely in vocabulary, grammar, and writing practices. They are classified into language families, isolates, or contact-induced varieties, reflecting historical development and interaction. Sociolinguistic factors—region, social group, ideology, and situation—shape how language is used, perceived, and regulated. Language contact can lead to borrowings, code-switching, pidgins, and creoles.

Writing systems extend lenguatge beyond speech by representing language visually through alphabets, syllabaries, or logographic scripts. Literacy and orthographic standards influence education, media, and technology use.

The study of lenguatge spans theoretical and applied disciplines. Core fields include linguistics (phonology, syntax, semantics), psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, and computational linguistics. Language documentation, preservation, and policy also play important roles in addressing diversity and endangerment.
