Lengdenes

Lengdenes is a town and municipality in the coastal region of Nordmark, in the fictional country of Veridia. It lies along the Lengden Bay and is bordered by the Lengden River to the north. The municipality covers about 42 square kilometers and had a population of approximately 8,400 in 2023. The town serves as the administrative center of the area and provides services to surrounding villages.

The name Lengdenes is of Old Norse and local dialect origin, with elements meaning long and bend, reflecting the town's long coastline and river bend. Historical forms include Lengdnes and Lengdene, showing regional linguistic variation.

History: Lengdenes originated as a fishing village in the medieval period. It received municipal rights in the 16th century and developed as a trading harbor in the early modern era. The 19th and 20th centuries brought modernization, including harbor improvements, rail connection, and the growth of light industry. The town endured several fires but rebuilt steadily.

Economy and infrastructure: The local economy combines fishing, aquaculture, small manufacturing, and tourism. The harbor remains central, with a fish market and ferries to nearby islands. Lengdenes is connected by the Nordmark Line railway and a regional highway, and it hosts a primary and secondary school, a hospital outpatient clinic, and a municipal library.

Culture and landmarks: Notable sites include Saint Marek's Church, a 13th-century structure renovated in the 18th century; the 17th-century Town Hall; and the waterfront promenade. The annual Lengdenes Seafair festival celebrates maritime heritage with music, crafts, and a boat parade.
