Lendules
Lendules are a type of traditional Latvian musical instrument. They are string instruments that belong to the zither family. Historically, lendules were played by farmers and folk musicians. The instrument typically features a trapezoidal soundboard with a varying number of strings stretched across it. These strings are usually plucked or strummed to produce music. The number of strings and the exact construction can differ, leading to variations in sound and playing technique. Lendules were often used to accompany singing or for solo performances during folk celebrations and gatherings. While not as widely played today as in the past, efforts are being made to preserve and revive the tradition of lendule playing. Luthier and musicians continue to study and recreate historical lendules, ensuring their cultural heritage is passed on to future generations. The sound of a lendule is often described as resonant and harmonic, contributing to the unique soundscape of Latvian folk music.
