Lektininitierelated, also known as LIR, is a term used in molecular biology and immunology to describe a family of proteins and the biological processes they are involved in. These proteins are characterized by their ability to bind to specific carbohydrate structures, a property shared with lectins. However, the term "lektininitierelated" typically refers to a specific subset of lectin-like molecules that play crucial roles in cellular recognition, adhesion, and signaling pathways.

The best-known members of the lektininitierelated family are the sialoadhesin family, including sialoadhesins, CD22, and CD33. These molecules are predominantly expressed on immune cells, particularly myeloid cells and B lymphocytes. Their primary function is to recognize and bind to sialic acids, a type of sugar found on the surface of other cells or in extracellular matrices. This binding can mediate cell-cell interactions, modulate immune responses, and influence the behavior of immune cells, such as their activation, proliferation, and cytokine production.
