Lebensmittelüberwachung refers to the official control and supervision of food products within Germany to ensure consumer safety and prevent deception. This comprehensive system is designed to guarantee that food sold and consumed meets all legal requirements regarding hygiene, quality, and labeling.

The primary goal of Lebensmittelüberwachung is to protect public health by identifying and removing unsafe food from the market. This includes checking for contaminants, harmful substances, and adherence to strict hygiene standards during production, processing, and distribution. Alongside safety, the system also addresses issues of fair trade, ensuring that consumers are not misled by inaccurate or deceptive information on food packaging, such as false claims about origin, ingredients, or nutritional value.

Federal authorities set the overarching legal framework and guidelines, while the individual federal states (Länder) are responsible for implementing and enforcing these regulations within their territories.
