Leakdetektálás, commonly referred to as leak detection, is the process of identifying the presence and location of unintended releases of substances, such as water, gas, or oil, from containment systems. These systems can include pipes, tanks, reservoirs, and other infrastructure designed to hold and transport fluids. The primary goal of leak detection is to prevent or minimize the negative consequences associated with leaks, which can range from financial losses due to wasted resources and costly repairs to significant environmental damage and safety hazards.

Various methods are employed for leak detection, depending on the type of substance, the environment, and the scale of the system. Acoustic sensors are frequently used in water and gas pipelines, as they can detect the characteristic sound waves produced by escaping fluids. Infrared thermography can identify temperature anomalies on surfaces, indicating the presence of a cooler or warmer substance escaping. Tracer gases or dyes can be introduced into a system and then monitored for their appearance in surrounding areas. Pressure monitoring systems can also signal a leak by detecting a drop in pressure within a contained volume.
