There are two primary ways to form lauseyhdistelmiä: coordination and subordination. Coordination involves joining two or more independent clauses of equal grammatical rank, typically using conjunctions such as 'ja' (and), 'mutta' (but), or 'tai' (or). For example, "Aurinko paistaa ja linnut laulavat" (The sun is shining and the birds are singing). Both "Aurinko paistaa" and "linnut laulavat" are complete sentences on their own.

Subordination, on the other hand, involves joining a dependent clause to an independent clause. The dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence and typically provides additional information or context. These are often introduced by subordinating conjunctions like 'että' (that), 'kun' (when/as), 'jos' (if), or relative pronouns. An example is "Tiedän, että hän tulee huomenna" (I know that he is coming tomorrow). "että hän tulee huomenna" is a dependent clause that modifies the main clause "Tiedän".

Understanding lauseyhdistelmiä is crucial for constructing grammatically correct and coherent Finnish sentences.
