Lataushybrideissä, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in English, represent a significant development in automotive technology. They combine the benefits of both electric vehicles (EVs) and traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. A PHEV is equipped with a battery pack that can be recharged by plugging it into an external power source, such as a home charging station or a public charging point. This allows the vehicle to operate on purely electric power for a certain range, which is typically shorter than that of a dedicated EV.

When the battery charge is depleted or when greater power is required, the internal combustion engine seamlessly engages, providing propulsion. This dual-powertrain system offers flexibility, enabling drivers to utilize electric power for daily commutes and shorter trips, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions. For longer journeys, the gasoline engine acts as a range extender, eliminating the "range anxiety" sometimes associated with pure EVs.
