Laskujärjestys

Laskujärjestys, also known as the order of operations, is a set of rules used in mathematics to clarify the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed within an expression. This ensures that everyone arrives at the same, correct answer when evaluating a given expression. The standard order of operations is often remembered by the acronym PEMDAS or BODMAS, which represent the sequence of operations to be followed.

PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). BODMAS uses Brackets, Orders (or powers/roots), Division and Multiplication (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). Both acronyms essentially convey the same hierarchy.

First, operations within parentheses or brackets are performed. Next, exponents or orders (like powers and roots) are calculated. Following this, multiplication and division are carried out, strictly from left to right as they appear in the expression. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed, also from left to right. Adhering to this established order is crucial for consistent and accurate mathematical calculations, especially in more complex equations. Without a defined laskujärjestys, an expression could have multiple valid interpretations, leading to different results.
