Laskimopuolelta

Laskimopuolelta is a Finnish term meaning “from the venous side.” It is used in anatomy, physiology and clinical contexts to describe something that originates on or concerns the veins or venous return to the heart. The counterpart term is valtimonpuolelta (from the arterial side).

In practice, laskimopuolelta describes measurements, samples or processes associated with the venous portion of circulation. For example, a verinäyte (blood sample) taken from a vein is described as “laskimopuolelta otettu verinäyte.” Likewise, when discussing pressure, flow or chemical composition, authors may distinguish the laskimopuolelta from the valtimo-/arteriopuolelta. In physiology, arterial blood supplies tissues, while the venous side is involved in draining blood back toward the heart; the venous side typically has lower oxygen content and lower pressure than the arterial side.

Etymology and usage notes: the word combines laskimo (vein) + puoli (side) with the suffix -lta, indicating origin from that side. This directional descriptor is common in Finnish medical language for contrasting different parts of the circulatory system, such as the arterial and venous sides, or their respective features and measurements.
