As the molten glass cools, it enters a series of transitions. Further cooling leads to the softening point, where the glass begins to deform under its own weight or external pressure. Below this, the glass enters the annealing range. Annealing is a crucial process where glass is slowly cooled through this range to relieve internal stresses that develop during manufacturing or rapid cooling. Uncontrolled cooling can result in brittle glass prone to breakage.

As cooling continues, the glass reaches the strain point, the temperature below which internal stresses are minimal. Eventually, the glass solidifies into its hard, glassy state. It is important to note that glass does not have a sharp freezing point like crystalline solids; instead, it undergoes a gradual transition from a liquid to a rigid, amorphous solid over a wide temperature range.
