The response can be optical, chemical, thermal, or mechanical and typically depends on the properties of the incident light, such as wavelength, power, and pulse duration, as well as the material's composition and structure.

Common mechanisms include photothermal heating, where absorbed laser energy raises temperature; photochemical reactions such as isomerization or cleavage; photoluminescence or upconversion; and optically induced phase transitions in polymers and phase-change materials. Examples of laserresponsive components include gold or silver nanoparticles and nanorods that convert light to heat, organic photochromic molecules, dye-doped polymers, liquid crystals, and photosensitive hydrogels that dissolve or swell under light.

Applications span biomedicine, materials processing, and sensing. In biomedicine, laser-responsive systems enable targeted drug release or photothermal therapy. In materials science, they enable selective patterning, microfabrication, and actuation in soft robotics. In sensing, changes in refractive index or fluorescence under laser excitation can provide readouts.

Key considerations include choosing appropriate wavelength and pulse regime to maximize response while minimizing damage or fatigue. Depth penetration, thermal diffusion, stability, and photo-degradation affect performance. Integration with devices requires compatibility with substrates and safety standards.
