Laserlähettimiä, or laser emitters, are devices that produce laser light. This light is monochromatic, meaning it consists of a single wavelength, and is coherent, meaning its waves are in phase. Laser emitters can be categorized based on their active medium, which is the substance that amplifies light. Common types include semiconductor lasers, gas lasers, solid-state lasers, and fiber lasers.

Semiconductor lasers, also known as laser diodes, are widely used due to their small size, efficiency, and low cost. They are found in applications ranging from barcode scanners and CD/DVD players to telecommunications and high-power industrial cutting. Gas lasers, such as helium-neon lasers, are known for their stability and excellent beam quality, making them suitable for scientific research, interferometry, and alignment tasks.

Solid-state lasers utilize a solid material, often a crystal or glass doped with rare-earth elements, as the active medium. Examples include Nd:YAG lasers, which are employed in materials processing, medical surgery, and scientific instrumentation. Fiber lasers use optical fibers as the gain medium, offering advantages in terms of beam quality, efficiency, and robustness, and are increasingly used in industrial applications and telecommunications.

The emission of laser light involves a process called stimulated emission, where incoming photons trigger excited atoms or molecules in the active medium to release identical photons. This process, amplified within an optical cavity formed by mirrors, creates the intense, directional, and coherent laser beam. Laser emitters are fundamental components in a vast array of modern technologies.
