Larissa

Larissa is a city in central Greece, serving as the capital of the Thessaly region and the Larissa regional unit. It sits on the banks of the Peneius River in the Thessalian Plain. The area has ancient origins; in classical times, Larissa was the main city of the Thessalian League and one of the principal urban centers in Thessaly. It was subsequently ruled by the Roman and Byzantine empires, and later came under Ottoman rule.
