Landesregierungsministerium

Landesregierungsministerium is a term used in German-speaking federal states to describe a ministry that forms part of the state government (Landesregierung). It designates a government department responsible for a defined policy area and led by a minister who sits in the state's cabinet. Each state typically runs several such ministries, organized by portfolios such as finance, interior, education, economy, health, transport, culture, and the environment.

The ministry's core functions include devising policy concepts, drafting legislation and regulations applicable within the state, preparing and executing the state budget, and managing the administrative machinery of the portfolio. It also coordinates with other ministries to implement cross-cutting programs, represents the state's interests in interactions with federal authorities and other states, and ensures the implementation of state laws and public services within its remit. The minister heads the ministry and is usually supported by state secretaries or deputies and by civil servants.

Naming and organization vary between states. Some jurisdictions use "Ministerium" in the portfolio name, while others may employ terms such as "Staatsministerium" or "Staatskanzlei" for the coordinating body of the Landesregierung. The exact structure and competencies are defined by each state's constitution and political practice, but the general concept remains: a ministerial department within the state's executive that governs a specific policy area on behalf of the Landesregierung.
