Lagoissan

Lagoissan is a small commune in the Aude department of southern France, situated within the Occitanie region. It lies roughly fifty kilometres southeast of Carcassonne, in the arrondissement of Limoux and the canton of La Région Limouxine. The municipal territory covers about 6.25 square kilometres, with elevations ranging from 171 to 286 metres above sea level, and the river Aude forms part of its southern boundary. The climate here is Mediterranean, with mild winters and warm, dry summers.

The village dates back to the early Middle Ages and preserves several historical landmarks. The most prominent is the parish church of Saint‑Martin, whose Romanesque architecture and distinct bell tower have become a focal point of the local landscape. Historically, Lagoissan was under the jurisdiction of the Counts of Carcassonne and has long been associated with the region's agricultural activities, particularly olive cultivation and viticulture. In recent years, small‑scale winemaking has become an important local industry.

As of the 2017 census, Lagoissan had a population of 82 residents, characteristic of the rural settlements throughout the Aude area. The commune is connected to nearby towns by the D4 departmental road, providing access to Pamiers and Limoux, and reaches the A61 autoroute via the neighbouring village of Escot. Public services are modest; children attend schools in Limoux, and the local economy remains largely agrarian. An annual harvest festival is held each year, drawing visitors from neighbouring communes and celebrating the region's agricultural heritage.
