Lagnosticism

Lagnosticism is a term coined to describe a position that is agnostic about the existence of God or gods, but also agnostic about the existence of a soul or afterlife. It is a form of skepticism that extends beyond traditional theological concerns to encompass broader metaphysical questions about consciousness and immortality. A lagnostic individual would not claim certainty either for or against the presence of a divine being or for or against the concept of an enduring, non-physical self.

This stance acknowledges the limitations of human knowledge in definitively answering such profound questions. Instead of asserting belief or disbelief, lagnosticism embraces uncertainty. It suggests that current evidence and reasoning are insufficient to form a conclusive opinion on these matters. The focus is on recognizing the unknown rather than attempting to resolve it through faith or definitive denial.

Lagnosticism is not necessarily an active pursuit of knowledge regarding these topics, but rather a passive acceptance of their unknowability. It can be seen as an extension of philosophical inquiry, highlighting the boundaries of what can be known or proven. Individuals holding this view may find comfort or intellectual honesty in acknowledging the vastness of the unknown.
