Lagerstaplar

Lagerstaplar, often translated as "beer stacks" or "beer piles," are a visual phenomenon observed in the production of certain types of beer. This refers to the temporary accumulation of yeast and other particulate matter at the bottom of a fermentation vessel, particularly during the lagering process. Lagerstaplar are characteristic of bottom-fermenting yeasts, which are used in the production of lagers. As fermentation progresses, these yeasts settle out of the beer, forming a distinct layer.

The formation of a lagerstapel is a natural part of the brewing process and indicates that the yeast is performing its function. The composition of the lagerstapel can vary depending on the specific yeast strain, fermentation conditions, and the type of beer being brewed. It typically includes yeast cells, proteins, hop resins, and other solids that precipitate out of the solution.
