Laboratoriofuusiossa, also known as laboratory fusion, refers to the scientific and engineering efforts aimed at harnessing the energy produced by nuclear fusion reactions in a controlled manner. This process involves combining atomic nuclei to release a tremendous amount of energy, similar to the reactions that power the Sun. The primary goal of laboratory fusion research is to develop a sustainable and virtually limitless source of energy, with minimal environmental impact compared to traditional fossil fuels.

The most promising approach to laboratory fusion is magnetic confinement fusion, where plasma (a hot, charged gas) is confined within a magnetic field to sustain the fusion reactions. Another method is inertial confinement fusion, which uses high-energy lasers or particle beams to compress and heat a small pellet of fuel, initiating the fusion process. Both approaches face significant technical challenges, including maintaining the high temperatures and pressures required for fusion, and developing materials that can withstand the extreme conditions.

Laboratory fusion research is conducted by numerous institutions worldwide, including national laboratories, universities, and private companies. Key players in this field include the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a collaborative effort involving 35 nations, and various private ventures such as Commonwealth Fusion Systems and TAE Technologies. Despite the progress made, achieving practical and economically viable fusion power remains a long-term goal, with estimates suggesting that it could still be decades away.

The potential benefits of laboratory fusion include a nearly inexhaustible fuel supply, with deuterium and tritium isotopes of hydrogen being readily available, and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and radioactive waste compared to current energy sources. However, the challenges associated with laboratory fusion research, such as the high cost of development and the need for advanced materials and technologies, continue to hinder its widespread adoption.
