Laboratoriedestillasjon is a fundamental technique used in chemistry for separating components of a liquid mixture based on their boiling points. This process involves heating the mixture to its boiling point, causing the most volatile component to vaporize. The vapor then rises into a condenser, where it is cooled and reverts to a liquid state. This purified liquid, known as the distillate, is collected separately.

The simplest form of laboratory distillation is simple distillation, suitable for separating liquids with significantly different boiling points (a difference of at least 25 degrees Celsius) or for separating a volatile liquid from a non-volatile solute. For mixtures with closer boiling points, fractional distillation is employed. This method uses a fractionating column placed between the distillation flask and the condenser, which provides a larger surface area for repeated vaporization and condensation cycles, leading to a more efficient separation.

Other variations include vacuum distillation, used for compounds that decompose at their normal boiling points, by reducing the pressure to lower the boiling temperature. Steam distillation is employed for temperature-sensitive compounds, often natural products, by passing steam through the mixture, which carries the volatile components over at a lower temperature. The choice of distillation method depends on the specific properties of the mixture to be separated. This technique is crucial for purification, analysis, and the preparation of pure substances in research and educational settings.
