Laagriga

Laagriga, also known as the Laagriga Airport, is a small airport located in Vakoalewa, a rural area in the island nation of Tonga. The airport serves as a regional hub for the surrounding villages and communities, catering to domestic air travel.

Laagriga Airport has a single unpaved runway, approximately 1,200 feet long and 30 feet wide. The airport has a small terminal building, equipped with basic amenities for passengers. Currently, there are no scheduled commercial flights operating at the airport.

Laagriga Airport's remote location and limited infrastructure present challenges for air traffic services. Prior to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) compliance, air traffic control operations were managed through a small navigation system. Following ICAO guidelines, the airport has implemented a basic navigation aid system to enhance safety.

Aviation in Tonga dates back to the 1900s, with the establishment of a small airfield in Nuku'alofa. Over the years, the nation has developed its aviation infrastructure to support growing demand for air travel. Efforts have been made to upgrade the country's aviation system, including Laagriga Airport, to meet international safety standards.
