LTC4synteesin, also known as leukotriene C4 synthase, is a key enzyme in the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, a group of potent lipid mediators involved in inflammatory and allergic responses. This enzyme catalyzes the conversion of the intermediate leukotriene A4 (LTA4) into leukotriene C4 (LTC4). LTC4 is a crucial molecule that, upon release from cells, can be further metabolized into other biologically active leukotrienes, namely LTD4 and LTE4. These subsequent leukotrienes play significant roles in various physiological processes, including smooth muscle contraction, particularly in the airways, leading to bronchoconstriction.
