LNGElektroantrieben refers to electric propulsion systems utilizing liquefied natural gas (LNG). These systems combine the benefits of electric drive with the energy density of LNG, offering a potentially cleaner and more efficient alternative to traditional internal combustion engines in certain applications. The core of an LNGElektroantrieb system involves an onboard LNG fuel tank that supplies the liquefied natural gas to an internal combustion engine or a fuel cell. This engine or fuel cell then generates electricity, which powers an electric motor that drives the vehicle or vessel.

The primary advantage of LNGElektroantrieben lies in their reduced emissions compared to diesel or heavy fuel oil. LNG combustion produces significantly lower levels of sulfur oxides (SOx) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and also reduces particulate matter. This makes them attractive for maritime applications and heavy-duty transport where emission regulations are becoming increasingly stringent. Furthermore, the high energy density of LNG allows for longer ranges and reduced refueling frequency compared to battery-electric systems of similar weight.

However, challenges exist. The infrastructure for storing and distributing LNG is still developing, particularly in smaller ports or remote areas. The cryogenic nature of LNG requires specialized insulated tanks and handling procedures, adding complexity and cost to the system. Despite these hurdles, LNGElektroantrieben are being explored and implemented in sectors such as ferries, cargo ships, and heavy-duty trucks as a transitional technology towards zero-emission solutions.
