LIGOIndia

LIGOIndia, officially the LIGO-India gravitational wave observatory, is a planned advanced gravitational wave detector to be established in India. It is a major international collaboration, primarily involving researchers from India and the United States, building upon the success of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in the US. The project aims to significantly expand the global network of gravitational wave detectors, providing crucial capabilities for the precise localization of astrophysical events like black hole and neutron star mergers.

The facility will be located in Hingoli, in the state of Maharashtra, India. LIGOIndia will consist of three detectors, similar in design to the Advanced LIGO detectors, arranged in an L-shape with kilometer-long arms. This configuration allows for the detection of minute distortions in spacetime caused by passing gravitational waves. The primary scientific goals of LIGOIndia include enhancing the sensitivity and sky-localization capabilities of the global network, enabling faster follow-up observations by optical and other telescopes, and contributing to a deeper understanding of cosmic phenomena.

The establishment of LIGOIndia represents a significant step in India's scientific infrastructure and its participation in cutting-edge astrophysics research. The project involves extensive scientific and technical expertise from institutions across India and the US, fostering collaboration and capacity building.
