LFGpäästöjä

LFGpäästöjä refers to emissions originating from landfills. This term, a portmanteau of "landfill gas" and "päästöjä" (Finnish for emissions), specifically denotes the gases produced during the decomposition of organic waste within a landfill site. The primary components of landfill gas are methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), both potent greenhouse gases. Other trace gases, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can also be present.

The generation of LFGpäästöjä is a natural biological process. As organic materials like food scraps, yard waste, and paper break down anaerobically (without oxygen) in the absence of oxygen, microorganisms metabolize the waste, releasing methane and carbon dioxide. The rate and composition of LFGpäästöjä are influenced by factors such as the type of waste, its moisture content, temperature, and the age of the landfill.

Uncontrolled LFGpäästöjä contribute to climate change due to the greenhouse effect of methane and carbon dioxide. Methane is particularly concerning as it has a much higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide over shorter timeframes. Furthermore, the presence of VOCs can pose local air quality and odor issues.

To mitigate these emissions, landfill operators often implement landfill gas capture systems. These systems collect the gas, which can then be flared (burned off to convert methane to less potent CO2) or utilized as a renewable energy source to generate electricity or heat. Effective waste management practices, including waste reduction, recycling, and composting, are also crucial in minimizing the amount of organic material sent to landfills, thereby reducing LFGpäästöjä generation.
