L1välimuistiin, often referred to as L1 cache, is a small, extremely fast memory located directly on the CPU (Central Processing Unit). It is the first level of cache memory that the processor accesses when it needs data or instructions. The primary purpose of L1 cache is to minimize the time the CPU spends waiting for data from slower memory levels, such as the L2 cache, L3 cache, or main system RAM.

This cache is divided into two main parts: the L1 instruction cache (L1I) and the L1 data cache (L1D). The L1I stores frequently used instructions that the CPU needs to execute, while the L1D stores frequently accessed data. This separation allows the CPU to fetch instructions and data simultaneously, further improving performance.

The size of L1 cache is typically very small, often measured in kilobytes (KB). For example, a modern CPU might have 32 KB of L1I and 32 KB of L1D. Despite its small size, its proximity to the CPU cores and its high-speed operation make it incredibly effective. When the CPU requires a piece of information, it first checks the L1 cache. If the information is present (a "cache hit"), it is retrieved almost instantaneously. If not (a "cache miss"), the CPU then checks the L2 cache, and so on, with each subsequent miss incurring a greater performance penalty. The efficient management of L1 cache is crucial for overall system responsiveness and processing speed.
