Långdistansmottagning refers to the reception of radio signals over extended geographical distances, far beyond the typical line-of-sight range. This phenomenon is primarily enabled by various propagation modes that allow radio waves to travel around or over obstacles and the curvature of the Earth. The most common mode for long-distance reception of shortwave radio (roughly 3-30 MHz) is ionospheric reflection, where radio waves are refracted or reflected back to Earth by the ionized layers of the Earth's upper atmosphere, the ionosphere. The effectiveness of this reflection depends on factors such as the frequency of the signal, the angle of incidence, and the density and height of the ionospheric layers, which in turn vary with time of day, season, and solar activity.

Other mechanisms contributing to långdistansmottagning include tropospheric ducting, where temperature inversions in the lower atmosphere can trap radio waves and guide them over long distances, particularly at VHF and UHF frequencies. Ground wave propagation is also significant for lower frequencies (below 3 MHz), where the waves follow the curvature of the Earth. Diffuse reflection from meteor trails or auroral ionization can also momentarily facilitate long-distance communication at specific frequencies.
