Lämpönsiirto, often translated as heat transfer, is a fundamental concept in physics and engineering that describes the movement of thermal energy from one location to another. This transfer occurs due to a temperature difference, with heat naturally flowing from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. There are three primary mechanisms by which heat transfer takes place: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact between particles. In solids, this involves vibrations of atoms and molecules, while in liquids and gases, it also involves collisions between these particles. Conduction is most effective in materials that are good thermal conductors, such as metals.

Convection involves the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, which can be liquids or gases. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating convection currents that distribute heat. This is a common mechanism in everyday phenomena like boiling water or atmospheric circulation.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium to travel and can occur through a vacuum. The most familiar example is the Sun's heat reaching Earth. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit thermal radiation. Understanding these different modes of heat transfer is crucial for designing efficient heating and cooling systems, insulating buildings, and analyzing various natural phenomena.
