Its primary function is to transfer heat generated by a source, such as a boiler or heat pump, to radiators, underfloor heating, or air handling units throughout the building. This ensures comfortable indoor temperatures for occupants.

The system typically consists of a network of pipes or ducts through which a heat-carrying medium, usually water or air, circulates. The heat source warms this medium, and a pump or fan then circulates it to the different zones requiring heating. As the medium travels through the distribution network, heat is released into the surrounding environment via the emitters. Once the medium has released its heat, it returns to the heat source to be reheated, completing the cycle.
