Läkemedelsdoseringsform refers to the physical form in which a medicinal drug is presented for administration to a patient. The primary purpose of a specific dosing form is to ensure the accurate delivery of a precise dose of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to the body, while also optimizing its absorption, stability, and patient compliance. Different dosing forms are designed for various routes of administration, such as oral, topical, parenteral (injection), or inhalation.

Common oral dosing forms include tablets, capsules, solutions, suspensions, and syrups. Tablets are solid dosage forms that are compressed into a specific shape and size, often coated to mask taste or facilitate swallowing. Capsules consist of a shell, typically made of gelatin, enclosing the API in powder or granular form. Liquids like solutions and suspensions are formulated for patients who have difficulty swallowing solids or require faster absorption.

For topical administration, creams, ointments, gels, and patches are used, delivering the medication directly to the skin or mucous membranes. Parenteral dosing forms, such as injections and infusions, bypass the digestive system and are used when rapid onset of action is required or when the drug is poorly absorbed orally. Inhalers and nebulizers deliver medication directly to the lungs for respiratory conditions. The choice of dosing form depends on factors including the drug's properties, the desired therapeutic effect, the patient's condition, and the route of administration.
