Küvetid

Küvetid is a small rural settlement situated in the Ağın District of Elazığ Province in eastern Turkey. The village lies at an elevation of approximately 1,200 metres above sea level, surrounded by the highland valleys that characterize the region. Its name is derived from the Turkish word “küvet,” meaning a laundry basket or a basin, and the suffix “‑id,” which historically indicates a place or locality. Historical references mention Küvetid in provincial records dating back to the late Ottoman period, where it was listed among the “köy” (villages) in the Ağın Sanjak.

The population of Küvetid has fluctuated over the decades, with the most recent census recording around 80 residents, many of whom are engaged in subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry. The village is known for its terraced fields, which are cultivated with barley, wheat, and occasional fruit orchards. A small stream runs through the village, providing water for irrigation and fish farming.

Culturally, Küvetid shares many traditions common to the broader Ağın area, including folk music played on the bağlama and celebrations of the Kurdish New Year, Newroz, in communal gatherings. Local architecture consists mainly of stone and timber houses, many of which have been preserved in their traditional style. The village is accessible by a paved road connecting it to the district centre, and it is part of the wider network of rural communities that maintain agricultural practices and folk customs in the Anatolian highlands.
