Kütusesõidukeid, also known as fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), are a type of electric vehicle that uses a fuel cell to produce electricity through an electrochemical process. Unlike battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which store energy in batteries, FCEVs generate electricity from a fuel source, typically hydrogen, through the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen.

The process involves a fuel cell stack, which consists of multiple cells where the electrochemical reaction takes place. Hydrogen is fed to the anode, and oxygen is fed to the cathode. The reaction produces electricity, water, and heat. The water is a byproduct of the reaction and is typically vented out of the vehicle.

One of the main advantages of FCEVs is their ability to refuel quickly, similar to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. This is because the fuel cell can start producing electricity almost instantly after hydrogen is introduced. Another benefit is the lack of tailpipe emissions, as the only byproduct is water.

However, FCEVs also have some challenges. The production and distribution of hydrogen fuel is not as widespread as that of gasoline or electricity. Additionally, the infrastructure for refueling FCEVs is still in development. The cost of fuel cells and the overall cost of FCEVs are also higher compared to BEVs.

Despite these challenges, FCEVs are considered a promising technology for the future of transportation. They offer a zero-emission driving experience and can travel longer distances on a single fueling compared to BEVs. As hydrogen infrastructure and technology continue to improve, FCEVs may play a significant role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to a more sustainable transportation system.
