Kötésszög

Kötésszög, a Hungarian term, translates to "bond angle" in English and refers to the angle formed between two adjacent bonds that are connected to a central atom. This concept is fundamental in chemistry, particularly in understanding molecular geometry and predicting the shapes of molecules.

The bond angle is a critical determinant of a molecule's properties, influencing its polarity, reactivity, and physical characteristics such as boiling point and solubility. For instance, the linear shape of carbon dioxide, with its 180-degree bond angle between the carbon and oxygen atoms, contributes to its nonpolar nature. In contrast, water's bent shape, with a bond angle of approximately 104.5 degrees between the hydrogen atoms and the oxygen atom, results in a polar molecule due to the uneven distribution of electron density.

Several factors influence bond angles, including the types of atoms involved, the presence of lone pairs of electrons on the central atom, and steric hindrance (repulsion between electron clouds of non-bonding atoms). The Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory is a widely used model to predict molecular geometry and, consequently, bond angles. This theory posits that electron pairs in the valence shell of a central atom arrange themselves to minimize repulsion, thus dictating the spatial arrangement of atoms and the resulting bond angles. Variations in bond angles can also arise from hybridization of atomic orbitals, such as sp, sp2, and sp3 hybridization, which lead to characteristic geometric arrangements and bond angles.
