Könnytüszkapillárisok

Könnytüszkapillárisok, also known as lacrimal canaliculi, are small channels that collect tears from the surface of the eye and drain them into the lacrimal sac. There are two lacrimal canaliculi, one for each eyelid, a superior and an inferior one. They originate from a small opening called the punctum lacrimale, which is typically located on the medial aspect of each eyelid margin.

Upon blinking, the lacrimal pump mechanism, facilitated by the contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle, draws tears from the ocular surface into the canaliculi. The canaliculi then transport the tears towards the lacrimal sac, which is situated in a shallow groove on the medial wall of the orbit. From the lacrimal sac, the tears continue their journey down the nasolacrimal duct, eventually draining into the nasal cavity.

Blockage or inflammation of the könnytüszkapillárisok can lead to various ophthalmological conditions. If the punctum is blocked, tears may overflow onto the face, causing epiphora. Inflammation, known as canalicular obstruction or dacryocystitis when it involves the lacrimal sac, can cause pain, redness, and discharge. Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the blockage or inflammation, and may involve irrigation, probing, or surgical intervention. These tiny structures play a crucial role in maintaining ocular comfort and health by ensuring proper tear drainage.
