Königsfelden

Königsfelden is a locality and former municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau. Today, it forms part of the municipality of Windisch, situated in the district of Brugg. The name Königsfelden translates to "King's Field" and is historically significant due to a key event that occurred there.

In 1308, the Holy Roman Emperor Albert I was assassinated at Königsfelden by his nephew, John Parricida. This event marked the end of the Habsburg dynasty's immediate succession in the male line and led to a period of instability within the Holy Roman Empire. Following the assassination, Albert I's widow, Elizabeth of Görlitz, founded the Königsfelden Abbey in memory of her husband and to atone for the sin of fratricide. The abbey became a prominent religious and economic center in the region and housed a community of Franciscan nuns.

The Königsfelden Abbey was secularized in 1528 during the Reformation, and its buildings were later repurposed. Today, the former abbey complex, known as Kloster Königsfelden, is a significant historical site. It houses a museum and is also home to the Cantonal Spital (hospital) for psychiatric care. The area is also known for its archaeological remains, which offer insights into the history of the former Roman fort of Tenedo, located nearby. Königsfelden remains an important place for understanding Swiss and European history.
