Költségcentereknek is a Hungarian term that translates to "cost centers" in English. In accounting and management, a cost center is a division, department, or function within an organization that incurs costs but does not directly generate revenue. The primary purpose of identifying cost centers is to track and control expenses effectively.

Organizations use cost centers to allocate financial responsibility to specific areas. By breaking down expenses by cost center, management can better understand where money is being spent, identify areas of overspending, and implement measures to improve cost efficiency. Each cost center is assigned a budget, and its performance is evaluated based on its ability to stay within that budget while still fulfilling its operational objectives.

Examples of cost centers include departments like human resources, accounting, IT support, marketing (in some organizational structures), and manufacturing plants that are not directly responsible for sales. While these departments incur expenses necessary for the overall functioning of the business, their direct contribution to revenue generation is typically handled by revenue centers or profit centers.
