As a noun, kërkimtar refers to a person who engages in searching, investigating, or pursuing knowledge, often in scholarly, scientific, or exploratory contexts. For example, one might describe a researcher or an explorer as a kërkimtar. In practice, the term emphasizes the act of seeking and discovery, rather than simply performing routine tasks. The plural form is kërkimtarë.

As an adjective, the term conveys a sense of being oriented toward searching or inquiry, though in Albanian more common alternatives for describing research or investigative activity are words like hulumtues or kërkimor. Nevertheless, kërkimtar can appear in literary or formal contexts to highlight a quest-driven mindset or a character trait of persistence in seeking answers. For instance, a biographical note might refer to someone as a kërkimtar i pasionuar i historisë.
