Källkodningens, sometimes referred to as source coding, is a fundamental concept in information theory and data compression. It deals with the process of converting data into a coded representation, typically for the purpose of efficient storage or transmission. The primary goal of source coding is to reduce redundancy in the data, thereby minimizing the number of bits required to represent it without losing essential information.

This process is distinct from channel coding, which focuses on adding redundancy to protect data against errors during transmission. Source coding aims to exploit the inherent statistical properties of the source data. For example, if certain symbols or values appear more frequently than others, source coding techniques can assign shorter codes to these common elements and longer codes to less frequent ones. This variable-length coding scheme leads to an overall reduction in the average code length.

Common source coding techniques include Huffman coding and arithmetic coding. Huffman coding builds a binary tree based on symbol frequencies to generate optimal prefix codes, where no code is a prefix of another. Arithmetic coding represents an entire message as a single fraction, achieving compression ratios closer to the theoretical entropy limit. The effectiveness of source coding is measured by its compression ratio and the fidelity of the reconstructed data. It is a crucial component in many modern technologies, including digital audio and video compression, file archiving, and text compression.
