Kyushus

Kyushus are a fictional ethnolinguistic group described as inhabiting the Kyushan Archipelago, a chain of volcanic islands in the eastern sea of the continent of Asteria. Traditionally maritime, they developed inter-island trade networks and resilient coastal communities. The term Kyushus refers to both the people and the cultural-linguistic grouping.

Kyushan is an agglutinative language with subject–object–verb order, sharing features with neighboring island languages. The main dialects are Northern Kyushan, Coastal Kyushan, and High-Island Kyushan. Traditional inscriptions use the Kyushi script, and literacy programs promote bilingual education in Kyushan and the regional lingua franca, Asteran.

Society centers on kin-based clans. Local governance combines a Council of Elders with elected island chiefs. Women hold roles in trade and ritual leadership, while men lead seafaring guilds, fishing fleets, and public works.

Economy relies on fishing, reef agriculture such as taro and yams, and boatbuilding. Cultural life features sea-faring songs, boat-racing festivals, and tide rites. Craftwork includes weaving and carved prows.

Origins are traced to medieval-era maritime migrations. In the modern era, the Kyushan Archipelago forms a semi-autonomous region within the Federation of Asteria, with its own regional government, language preservation programs, and cultural institutions.
