Smaller seeds generally require a shallower planting depth to ensure they receive adequate sunlight and do not expend too much energy reaching the surface. Larger seeds can be planted deeper, as they possess more stored energy to support initial growth. For instance, tiny seeds like lettuce or poppy might be sown just a few millimeters deep, while larger seeds like corn or beans could be planted several centimeters deep.

Soil texture plays a significant role. In heavier clay soils, seeds may need to be planted slightly shallower than in lighter sandy soils. This is because clay soils retain moisture more effectively, and shallowly planted seeds in wet clay can become waterlogged.
