Kylmäärsyke refers to the physiological response of the body to cold stimuli. This response is multifaceted and involves a series of adaptations aimed at maintaining core body temperature. This reduces blood flow to the skin surface, thereby minimizing heat loss to the environment.

Another significant aspect of the cold response is shivering. Shivering is an involuntary muscular activity that generates heat as muscles contract and relax rapidly. This process can significantly increase the body's metabolic rate and heat production. Non-shivering thermogenesis also plays a role, especially in infants and individuals with more brown adipose tissue, where metabolic processes within specialized fat cells generate heat without muscle activity.

The nervous system plays a crucial role in mediating the cold response. Sensory receptors in the skin detect the decrease in temperature and send signals to the hypothalamus in the brain, which acts as the body's thermostat.
