Kvävebindande

Kvävebindande, also known as nitrogen fixation, is a natural or industrial process that converts atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) into a more usable form for living organisms, such as ammonia (NH3). Atmospheric nitrogen is abundant, making up about 78% of Earth's atmosphere, but its triple bond makes it largely inert and inaccessible to most life.

The primary natural method of kvävebindande occurs through biological processes carried out by certain microorganisms, collectively called diazotrophs. These include bacteria and archaea found in various environments, such as soil, aquatic ecosystems, and symbiotic relationships. The most well-known examples are rhizobia bacteria, which form nodules on the roots of leguminous plants like peas, beans, and clover. These bacteria possess the enzyme nitrogenase, which catalyzes the conversion of N2 to ammonia. This ammonia is then assimilated by the plant, providing a vital nutrient for its growth.

In addition to biological fixation, kvävebindande can also occur through industrial processes, most notably the Haber-Bosch process. Developed in the early 20th century, this method uses high temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst to synthesize ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen gas. This industrial ammonia is crucial for the production of synthetic fertilizers, which have dramatically increased agricultural yields worldwide, but also have environmental consequences. Lightning strikes also contribute to atmospheric nitrogen fixation through high-energy atmospheric reactions.

The ability to convert atmospheric nitrogen into biologically available forms is essential for all life on Earth, as nitrogen is a fundamental component of amino acids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Without kvävebindande, the nitrogen cycle would be disrupted, limiting plant growth and consequently affecting the entire food web.
